Uterine Fibroids in Greenbelt

According to statistics from the Mayo Clinic, approximately 80% of women will have uterine fibroids by the age of 50. Most fibroids are benign, with less than 1% malignant, or cancerous. However, they all require some form of women’s health treatment when symptoms are present, as they can cause health problems.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids most commonly occur during the childbearing years. They are noncancerous growths that are made up of connective tissue and muscle from the wall of your uterus and can range in size from microscopic to large masses. They can grow singularly or in clusters.

What Are the Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?

Symptoms are influenced by the size, number, and location of the growth(s). Some women have no symptoms at all. However, others may experience heavy menstruation, longer than usual periods, pelvic pain/pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and/or back or leg pain.

How Are Uterine Fibroids Diagnosed?

You need a pelvic exam if you’re experiencing symptoms. First, your gynecologist will likely order an ultrasound for images of your uterus, as well as blood work. Additionally, if enough information is not obtained from an ultrasound, you may need an MRI, X-ray, or hysteroscopy for a fibroid diagnosis.

How Are Uterine Fibroids Treated?

If your symptoms do not impact the quality of your life, then no treatment is an option. However, if your symptoms are severe, your gynecologist might suggest medications, non-surgical procedures using MRI and soundwaves, or minimally invasive procedures such as uterine artery embolization, or radiofrequency ablation. In severe cases, a hysterectomy might be recommended.
