Periods can be quite the inconvenience, to say the least. When they become too heavy, it can be distressing and a little scary. But, how do you know what’s too heavy? When should you see your gynecologist to find out, “Am I bleeding too much during my period?”
What Is Menorrhagia?
This is the medical term for a period that is prolonged or abnormally heavy. A normal period shouldn’t impact your life in a negative way. With menorrhagia, it’s virtually impossible to maintain your normal activities.
What Are the Symptoms of Menorrhagia?
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, then the answer to your question, “Am I bleeding too much during my period,” is likely yes:
- Bleeding that lasts longer than a week
- Having to change your sanitary pad or tampon in the middle of the night
- Having to limit or cut out your regular daily activities
- Passing large blood clots
- Soaking through tampons or pads every hour for several hours
- Tiredness, fatigue, and / or shortness of breath when heavily bleeding
- Using extra sanitary pads to prevent leakage
When Should I See My Gynecologist?
If you have any of the symptoms listed above, if you bleed between periods, and / or if you are bleeding after menopause, it’s important you see your gynecologist as soon as possible.
How Is My Condition Diagnosed?
Your gynecologist will ask you about your symptoms and perform an exam. You may be asked to do testing like bloodwork, a Pap smear, biopsy, or ultrasound. Based on the results of those tests, you might also need a sonohysterography or hysteroscopy.
Are There Treatments Available for Heavy Bleeding?
There are quite a few successful treatment options. Yours will depend on several factors including but not limited to your health, medical history, age, and cause / severity of your condition.
Your gynecologist might suggest NSAIDs to help with pain and to reduce blood loss. Other treatment possibilities are oral contraceptives, tranexamic acid, oral progesterone, or an IUD.
